There are some things that make me an angry mom. Or at least an irritated one… like the assumption that my husband baby-sits instead of parents. Or when Norton decides to dive bomb off the back the couch and somehow hurt my back. Because I love my children, I do my best to exercise restraint when the angry mom comes out.
This morning, though, I did not exercise any restraint on the angry mom beast within. Well, I tried to keep my voice down, but that was it. So what brought out the mommy rage?
Let me tell you a little story.
Picture it. It’s 6:15 in the morning. Your heroine is awake with a wretched headache and is out to make the best of it. She’s snuggling up in her great, warm, cozy bed under a fluffy duvet. Her puppy is snuggled up beside her for their morning cuddles before it’s time to face the big bad world. She’s peacefully reading articles from Google News on her iPhone.
Then the phone rings. It’s loud, sharp, and demanding. Your heroine jumps out of bed and races across the room to press “talk” and end the ringing. In the brief seconds it takes her to get to the phone, a whole host of thoughts are racing through her head. Who could be calling at this hour? Is something terribly wrong with a family member on the east coast? Can she get the phone before the ringing wakes up her husband or children?
She snatched the phone up and saw a number she didn’t recognize on the caller ID as she pressed the talk button. Our heroine made her way back to bed, answering with a polite but very quiet “Hello?”
A female voice intently said, “We’re calling because of a problem with your Windows computer…”
Oh, to heck with the heroine thing. It’s all me. And at this point, I exploded. “Do you have any idea what time it is? Why on earth are you calling me at 6:15 in the morning? That’s not even legal!”
“We’re calling because you need to…”
And then I was really an angry mom. I used a couple of four letter words. The g-rated version is “No, heck I don’t. I’m on the do not call list for a reason. Don’t you ever call here again. Ever.”
The annoying caller quickly escaped my wrath by hanging up.
There are some reasons that this ticked me off. 1.) It’s 6:15 in the morning. Who calls someone that early unless it’s life or death? (I’m guessing that these scammers call in the middle of the night hoping that some confused and desperate soul will give them a credit card number or something.) 2.) As stated, I’m on the national do not call list. Although lately I’ve been wondering if that’s the list that telemarketers are using to harvest information. 3.) My husband is a network engineer and systems administrator for an ISP. If I had a problem with my computer, I wouldn’t get help from some stranger who calls me over the phone. I married a geek for a reason, and it wasn’t to get tech support from strangers. 4.) It’s a blasted scam.
Fortunately, my children slept through the call. My husband woke up to the sound of me furiously telling off the unwanted caller, but I think he went back to sleep after I got up. As for me, this angry mom will be reporting the violation of the national do not call list and hoping that the company receives a very hefty fine.
How do you deal with shmucks that call you to scam you at odd hours of the day?
