Toddlers are notoriously picky and changeable little creatures. It can be difficult to manage toddler nutrition, particularly if you’re fortunate enough to have a little tyrant who has decided that only one particular food is all that he’ll eat. With that in mind, I just had to share what I consider to be a toddler nutrition victory with Norton.
While I was at the doctor with Eudora after Norton stepped on her, the husband was outside in our van with Norton. It got hot, so they went to the nearby convenience store for a cool treat. The husband got an ice cream, and he was prepared to deal with the mess from letting Norton also enjoy a sugary treat. Norton, however, saw grapes in the cooler.
He grabbed some grapes and demanded those for a snack. Nothing else would do.
When Eudora and I got back to the van, I saw Norton snacking away on his grapes and the husband licking an ice cream cone. The husband seemed surprised that Norton refused ice cream. He has quite a little sweet tooth, which can make navigating the toddler diet a little tricky at times.
I wasn’t. While I do feel that Norton choosing grapes over garbage is a toddler nutrition victory, it’s not one that’s entirely shocking. Norton loves grapes. That’s been a constant snack around our house lately. (Well, either grapes, “bee-ohs” – or strawberries, or “naaa” – also known as bananas.) Plus, Norton has never actually had ice cream.
Why would he choose ice cream, which he’s never had before, over grapes… which are something that he absolutely adores? I have to admit, though, after that, I decided that I was absolutely not in any hurry to give Norton ice cream any time soon. Never giving him the junk in the first place makes it much easier to keep the good stuff in his toddler diet.
